      Jungle Islands Farm Restaurant is located near the back mountain of Jindian in Panlong District, Kunming, only half an hour's drive from the city. The main building of the farm restaurant is a three-story red brick building, with an indoor main dining area on the first floor, two landscape rooms on the second floor where employees and volunteers live, and a small terrace restaurant on the third floor.

      Covering an area of about 4.7 acres and surrounded by forests and fields, we are a quiet little escape from the hustle and bustle, but one filled with joy and an energy of our own kind! On weekends and holidays, we host a range of events and activities, including nature-study and crafts workshops, family and team-building activities, birthday parties, farmers’ markets – and, of course, our signature pizza-baking workshops (using our outdoor pizza oven).

      In our fields, we grow a range of flowers and vegetables, including potatoes, cabbage, and carrots, for the restaurant as well as our own consumption. Our permanent team consists of me (Ms. Cong) and my husband Mr. Mi who are responsible for daily operations, Ms. Mi who manages the fields, our children’s activities leader Ms. Zhang, and our housekeeper Ms. Zhou. We also have three lovely, chubby rabbits named Oreo, Elise, and Cream.

      Jungle Islands Farm Restaurant was officially listed in January 2023 and started trial operations in February 2023, which means our story has only just begun! Every day on the farm is different, and we love welcoming adventurous and enthusiastic volunteers to join us at this exciting stage in our journey. If you have experience or expertise in photography, writing, art, design, handicrafts, baking, gardening or related fields, let us know as this would be a big plus.

      What we offer our volunteers:
      - Free accommodation in the main building (A bunk bed in a shared room with max. 3 other people of the same gender, shared bathroom and shower)
      - Three meals a day (Ms. Zhou often incorporates ingredients from our garden or foraged from the nearby forests and will introduce you to many local specialities during your stay!)
      - One day off a week
      - Opportunities to learn about local culture, organic farming, event planning, rural entrepreneurship and more

      In return, we ask that you stay for at least 7 days (up to a month) and take part in roughly 4-5 hours of volunteer work a day – though please note that exact working hours will vary day-to-day as our restaurant operates on a reservation-only basis. On weekdays which tend to be very quiet, the total work in a day may only amount to 2-3 hours, while when we host events, your help will likely be needed throughout the full day.

      Standard tasks will include assisting in farm activities/welcoming guests/light cleaning and housekeeping/planting flowers and vegetables/feeding the rabbits – but if you are interested in other aspects of the business such as social media/marketing, we are more than happy to get you involved in those too!

    • Climate: Comfortable all year around (Kunming is known as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’), but that said, winters are notably colder and summers will have stronger UV radiation. Moreover, the temperature difference between morning and evening can be big, so we still recommend bringing some warm clothes no matter when you come.
