- Message to WWOOFers:
Would you like to make a difference in sustainable food production? What are your ideas to enhance human flourishing? Would you like to learn a new skill or try a new idea out? Perhaps you're interested in experiencing life in a rural community in China? How about being a part of a relational team?
Founded in 2017, Verdant Ecological Farms is a foreign-owned avocado and berry farm located on the banks of the pristine Yangtze River in Yunnan Province (SW China) striving to be a positive and transformative influence in rural agricultural development in China. With the leadership of Dr Jonathan (PhD in agricultural sciences), we have started a demonstration farm (~8 hectares) and introduced more than 14 varieties of avocados, as well as several other new crops to the area. Furthermore, we are assisting local farmers to ethically and sustainably grow avocados to improve livelihoods and human health.
As of 2023, we are again accepting visitors to join an Ecological Farming Experience. Your participation in this program will both benefit you individually as well as assist us in many ways to make our farm more sustainable. Based on the skills and effort you bring, we will make every effort to place each WWOOFer in roles fitting them individually and balanced with the needs of our farm. Possible work includes the following examples:
- assist in our avocado orchard (primarily, Fall and Winter).
- learn about animal care/management and implement ideals in one or more areas.
- make suggestions on better land stewardship and implement projects.
- work in our berry production (primarily, Winter and Spring).
- help organize an event (past events have included: a blackberry festival, cooking classes, a guacamole festival, river sporting classes, holiday feasts, farm-to-table meals, beekeeping seminars, processing trauma retreats, educational camps, mountain hiking/biking, rock climbing, Farm Open Days, etc.).
- develop marketing materials, videos, or promotional ideas.
- interact with customers.
- scout new avocado farm planting locations and help plan avocado orchard development.
- and MANY more!!Overall, we love to plug people into various roles that will help them become better people, improve our community, and make us a more sustainable farm.
In your free time, you might like to:
- study Chinese (we can help find you a tutor!).
- play a sport with a local, including ping pong, badminton, basketball, pickleball, soccer, etc.
- go paddle boarding or swimming in the river.
- make friends with the locals or visitors to our farm.
- attend a festival or farmer's market.
- take a day trip to the ancient cities of Dali or Lijiang (both of these are about a 2-hour drive from our farm). If this is of interest to you, let us know!
