The Woodenfish International Study Exchange is created in order to bring Chinese and English speaking Buddhists and non-Buddhists together, to share each others’ culture and learn each others’ languages, and to reach out to the general public to educate, connect and create a platform for exchanging studies and ideas. For the short term WISE will provide the opportunity for English speaking students to participate in an intensive study exchange program set in an authentic monastic context and to gain professional experience by volunteering in various projects. Over the long term, WISE will do it’s best to become a financially self-sufficient program of learning and teaching, and will be prepared to continuously host various courses and programs for the Woodenfish Organization, including the HBMLP and a Lay Dharma Teacher School.

Hello! We are excited you are interested in joining us. Please see this document for more info.

What the Woodenfish International Study Exchange (WISE) can promise to it’s participants:
Intense 6 weeks long Chinese language course (beginner and intermediate level classes)
In exchange for their volunteer work, residential participants of WISE can attend a 6 weeks long intense Chinese language course in order to swiftly become proficient in a new language.
Gaining professional experience in various fields
Residential participants of WISE will work at least 20 hours/week on average on assigned projects to fulfill their scholarship expectations and will be able to gain experience in whatever ways they can contribute to the development of WISE and the Woodenfish Organization (e.g. teaching, translating, project management, web-design, editing, publishing, content creation, public relations, etc.)
Deeper understanding of Buddhist studies and monastic etiquette
Residential participants of WISE will have to study and work in groups, to discuss and understand Buddhist teachings and terminology in order to be able to create coherent and consistent content for a bilingual Buddhist online magazine and radio. As WISE will be based in an authentic chan buddhist temple, participants will be exposed to the daily rituals and etiquette of monastic living and will have to follow certain rules to maintain the integrity of the program and the organization.
    Optional courses

Depending on instructor availability, residential participants of WISE can attend optional classes held within temple gruounds. Planned optional courses at the moment include: Martial arts, Chinese medicine, Chinese painting & calligraphy, Drama & theatre (Beijing opera). Available optional courses are subject to change.
    Personal time
Every two weeks, residential participants of WISE will be given two days of personal time in which they are free to travel and explore China. Travel and lodging expenses outside the temple on personal days are not covered in the scholarship grant.

What WISE expects from its participants:
Volunteer work for at least 20 hours/week on average
For the duration of the 6 weeks long residential WISE program, participants are required to stay for the whole program and do volunteer work to fulfill their scholarship agreement. Volunteer work includes but is not limited to:
teaching English language classes and other subjects in English to Chinese-speaking students on weekends and engaging students in written form throughout the week
working on assigned projects (online magazine and radio design, content creation, translation, public relations, project management, etc.)
Following the monastic code for laypeople on temple grounds
WISE residential participants are expected to conduct themselves appropriately in the monastic setting of a chan buddhist temple. Following the monastic code for laypeople means:
To refrain from injuring or killing any living being on temple grounds
To refrain from taking what is not given on temple grounds (stealing)
To refrain from telling lies and using harsh (abusive and improper) language
To refrain from consuming meat, intoxicants and smoking on temple grounds
To refrain from approaching other volunteers and monastics in a romantic manner
    Participation in language classes
WISE participants who are granted a scholarship to have their lodging expenses and Chinese language course tuition fees covered are expected to turn up for classes, do their homework and be assessed continuously during the 6 weeks long residential program.
Participation in group events, meetings and discussions
WISE participants are expected to be involved in the community – to attend meetings, group events and discussions where everybody’s voices can be heard, and where participants can communicate and discuss any potential issues, concerns, talk about the state of their projects and where the WISE program is headed. Everyone will be treated equally, there will be no right or wrong opinions and WISE will make sure to take it’s participants wishes and suggestions into consideration.
