WWOOF is a world wide exchange network where bed, board and practical
experience are given in return for help to hosts. Stays of varying
lengths are possible. The first WWOOF organization originated in
England in the 1970s, and since then has spread to more than 40
countries throughout the world. 'WWOOF' was originally an acronym for
'Weekend Workers on Organic Farms' and then as circumstances changed
with people wanting to visit farms at times other than weekends came to
mean 'Willing Workers On Organic Farms' and now some cite it as meaning
'World Wide Workers On Organic Farms'. These days not only farms, but
other places--businesses and families--are becoming Host
Establishments, thereby giving WWOOFers access to a greater diversity
of experience. A WWOOF Host Establishment invites people to come to
their establishment and work usually about 4 to 6 hours a day in return
for their daily food, boarding and the experience of sharing daily life
with the people who live and work at the Host Establishment.
Humble Beginnings
WWOOF began in England in 1971 when a London secretary, Sue Coppard,
took a group of volunteers on a weekend to Emmerson College, a
biodynamic training farm Sussex. from this week and a small group of
people, WWOOF UK was born. Travelers to the UK found out about WWOOF
and returning home began to set their own organizations. Since the
establishment of WWOOF in the U.K, WWOOF programs have been started in
over 28 countries around the globe.

SEWWOOF is a correspondence service linking organic farmers in the southeast United States
and apprentices by publishing the SEWWOOF Farm List which describes each farm operation,
compensation, etc.
Apprentices obtain Farm List by submitting application, available by contacting SEWWOOF,
along with $6 fee. Apprentices may also download the application directly from our web site,
complete it, and send it to us with the fee.
They then contact the farmer, then both establish farming work relationship.

Stop Press: The average in rural areas which constitutes the greater part of China is about US$100 a year. In an effort to encourage families in these communities to become hosts, we are waiving the annual host fee, and allowing hosts to charge Wwoofers up to US$4 per night per Wwoofer. This we hope will make a big difference to the lives of disadvantaged people. Throughout the site it says no money is paid to hosts; the reason for this is because this small payment idea is a new initiative.
Note: We are a new group, and we have few hosts compared to other Wwoofs. Many hosts are not organic farms. We are adding new host as quickly as we can.
